Just like in the previous tutorial Creating Tiled Sand in Photoshop 6.0, we will be following a step-by-step process to create a tileable background. This time we will apply the use of Photoshop's layers and transparency modes.

Since I used a Macintosh for this tutorial, Windows specific keyboard shortcuts will be listed in parenthesis. Screenshots are provided as necessary.

  1. First, we open a New file at 144 x 144 pixels (2” x 2”) and make the resolution 72 dpi. We then Save the file as a PSD with a descriptive title
  2. Photoshop 6 New dialog box

  3. We might also want to zoom in to about 200% using Command (Ctrl) +
  4. We will create or pick a background color. For this, I chose 25% gray, or R=193, G=193, B=193
  5. background color 25% gray

  6. Create a new layer above the one just created
    1. We click the icon to the left of the trashcan in the Layers palette (it looks like a stack of papers with the top one folded)
    2. Layers palette

For the rest of the tutorial, we will go to the next page.
